Freelance Photographer business. If you enjoy taking pictures, photography could be the business for you.

  Business Overview

Calling all hobby photographers, it's time to start to earn profits from your photography skills by cashing in on the huge demand for still pictures. Making money as a photographer can be done in a number of different ways. You can specialize in one area, the most common being weddings. Another way to specialize as a photographer is to take pictures at events like antique car shows or horse shows or corporate events. There are other niches you can explore for photography: portraits of people and their pets, families, and homes; photographs of holiday events, birthday parties or Christmas cards; the possibilities are endless. Think about your own hobbies and interests. Your photography services to, for example, the antique car show market will be much more marketable if you know the subject matter. As an antique car aficionado yourself, you would know what kinds of shots people would like of their cars, what pieces of a particular antique car are especially unique or photogenic, and what kinds of view shows the car off best.
If you decide to go the niche route, you will need to take some free photos for a while to be able to showcase your talent. In a photography business, pictures are definitely worth a thousand words.
If you just like wandering around taking interesting photos of landscapes and scenes, there are several online stock photo companies that buy photos. Some will pay outright for the highest quality photos, others basically work on consignment'you post your photos on their site and once a month you get a check for the number of photos, and number of times each photo gets downloaded by someone. Unless you want to specialize in large format or other traditional types of photography, digital is the way to go. Any good photographer will only get one shot out of twenty that are worth printing. By using digital cameras, you no longer have to process (and pay for) hundreds of slides or prints to find that one useable shot, or look at endless proof sheets to decide which photos might be worth having printed. Working digitally, you can snap away, with your only recurring cost being the memory cards used in your camera.

  Needed Equipment

Besides a camera, you'll need to have a good computer on which to view your shots. You'll need a good monitor for accurate viewing of your photos, and the right software to allow you to easily view and manipulate your images. Your computer needs to be fast and have lots of RAM since high-resolution color photos tend to be very large files.
