A new handheld food scanner paired with a smartphone will let users quickly identify the ingredients in their foods, making it easier to avoid allergens, chemicals or unwanted additives.
Designed to allow users to make smarter food choices, the device will use a Raman spectrometer, specialized cloud-based algorithm and a smartphone app. Beaming the low-powered laser at the food product in question will cause the food to emit low energy protons, which will then be sorted by wavelength and analyzed to determine the food's chemical makeup. The data will be processed and interpreted with the help of a cloud-based database, and the results will be sent to the user's smartphone.
