Instead of having car alarms that go off whenever someone bumps into the car or a strong wind blows, why not have them go off when they sense the car has been put in motion. Ramping up the decibel level inside the car would give the thief a little extra trouble for the trouble he put you through. As long as you remember to de-activate the alarm before driving off yourself this solution shouldn't cause you any headaches.

Lifeguard stations should be equipped with a harpoon-type gun that can be used to shoot a wide, circular raft (about 20 feet in diameter) beyond someone who's drowning. The raft would inflate on impact and could be pulled back in towards the victim using an electric reel attached to the harpoon gun. Since they make life preservers now with straps on them that can enclose any limb a person can stick through them, the raft should also come equipped with these straps. This would also let a...

Living in hurricane country we've always got to know what we're going to do when a hurricane comes. For a lot of people that means run like hell. Seems like sticking around would be a lot easier if you could do it safely. That's where this idea comes in. There are several companies in this area who have had the foresight to build their headquarters so they were strong enough to easily withstand a category 4 hurricane. They could make some extra money out of that fact by offering hurricane...

This idea combines the fact that people our willing to pay to get their name in print (vanity publishing) with the fact that movie studios are already willing to let companies pay for product placement. To make it work a production company or studio would offer a new product - people placement (names) in movies. Some of the details involved are listed below. 1. People would be charged an amount based on how big they wanted their name to appear on the screen. For instance, a name on the...

Whenever you see a TV report on floodings there's always some footage of cars that tried to make it down a road where the water turned out to be deeper than they thought, leaving them stranded. This device would prevent that. It would consist of 2 parts, one you hooked on to your front bumper and one that you left in your glove compartment until you needed it. When the need arose you'd pull the remote out of the glover and push a button. This would drop a rod down from the bumper device to...

I read about a phenomena called 'otoacoustic emission' in an article at newscientist.com where there was a dog who seemed to be humming everywhere he went. Here's an excerpt from the article: "In this condition, the normal hearing pathways in the ears are somehow reversed, so that the cochlear efferent nerve fibers stimulate outer hair cells to vibrate and make a noise. Other parts of the ear such as the tympanic membrane can then amplify the sound, until you end up like Zoe, humming...

I don't think there's ever been a baby who's worn out his or her shoes before their feet grew too big to need a new pair. One way to get more use out of the shoes, especially those used only for special occasions like patent leather mary janes or wingtips, would be to make them expandable. A small dial set into the sole could be turned to make the shoes a little longer and wider as the child grew. This might encourage people who were standing on the fence because the cost/use equation...

Here's a quick idea someone could make some money off of. The paper that comes on hangers from the cleaners is called a cape. People seem to like the fresh scent that fabric softeners add to their clothes so cleaners could offer scented caped hangers as an optional item. That way the scent would stay with the clothes a lot longer. (There could be other scents too, but you probably wouldn't want to mix too many of them together in one closet.)

This idea would require a simple computer program that displayed a screen asking 3 questions - 1. What equation/formula are you interested in? 2. What constant do you want replaced? 3. How many degrees of separation do you want? After you answer the questions the program would search a database that had been pre-loaded with as many standard equations / formulae as possible (engineering books are full of them) looking for ones that said the chosen constant equaled something...

As the color of democracy in the US changes from red, white and blue to green, it might be time to tinker with the design a little bit. Instead of letting money, power, charisma, lineage, etc... effect the outcome, why not give everyone a chance to lead the country by voting for anonymous slates of ideas (solutions to problems put forth by those who want to run for office). A primary would be run to pick the top 4 or 5 sets and then a runoff would be held with the authors of those ideas...
