Intended for use by healthcare workers, the bracelet will alter the wearer if it senses they have not washed their hands adequately. The bracelets will feature sensors able to determine if the wearer has followed the proper hand washing procedure, including how long they spent washing their hands and whether they used sanitizer or soap. The device will buzz once if the wearer has cleaned sufficiently and three times to signal a missed step. An RFID-based system can be incorporated...

A hand disinfecting concept can go beyond sanitizing liquids alone by allowing users to check whether they've missed a spot where bacteria may still exists. The device will be developed for use in hospitals. To use, hospital staff and visitors will place their hands over the device, where a hydro-alcoholic solution and plastic micro-ball solution will be automatically dispensed as a mist onto the hands. After scrubbing with the solution, users can then place their hands beneath the...

A newly developed liquid in conjunction with bacteria-killing gas will use viruses to help break down the resistance of antibiotic resistant bacteria, rendering them vulnerable to conventional cleaning products. The liquid will take advantage of virus infecting bacteria called bacteriophages. The bacteriophages have been engineered to restore a gene in the bacteria that they have lost in the process of becoming resistant. The liquid should cost only a few dollars per liter.

A new ultrasonic nozzle will use ultrasound technology to increase the cleaning efficiency of ordinary water while also reducing water use. The nozzle will differ from conventional ultrasound cleaning devices by the addition of bubbles, which will scrub the nooks and crannies of the material. The power will be set to low or high, and device will use one tenth the amount of water as a conventional pressure washer. It will also reduce the chances of contamination by putting less...

The idea is to create a portable laundry machine that will be operated by hand crank much like a salad spinner and use zero energy. Ideal for small spaces, mobile lifestyles, and displaced living, the laundry machine will be simple to use. Clothes, water and detergent will be added to the machine to soak. The user will then agitate and rinse the clothes by spinning the crank and draining or adding water as needed. Clothes will be spun partially dry in the same manner. The...

A self cleaning cloth will be able to destroy bacteria and toxins when exposed to light, which could be used to make safer clothing for farmers and medical workers. The cloth could be developed by incorporating the unusual compound 2-anthraquinone carboxylic acid (2-AQC) into the fabric. The compound will bond to the cotton without changing its properties, and produce hydroxyl radicals and hydrogen peroxide when exposed to light, which instantly will kill bacteria and break down...

The idea is to create a spray-on antibacterial coating which will work even after several washings and will be applied to a variety of textiles as well as other materials. The polymer coating is supposed to be simple, inexpensive, and scalable. Able to kill a wide spectrum of bacteria, yeasts, and molds, it will be applied to both natural and synthetic materials, either during manufacturing or at home by the owner. The coating will be able to survive several hot water washings, and...

The idea is to develop a device able to detect the exact location of bedbugs in just 15 minutes. Bedbugs are extremely hard to find- they are incredibly tiny, and they are immune to most poison bait or bombs. Exterminators have been using dogs to sniff out pests, and the device will able to sniff out bed bugs in much the same way as the dogs. The "electronic nose" will consist of CO2 and methane sensors along with a pheromone detector to determine a bedbug's location within one...

Why not create a trash bin which will consist of several disposable and recycled paper containers nested inside one another? This will eliminate the need for plastic can liners. Such a bin would be the ideal choice for disposing of paper products, since the contents and bag could all be recycled together. It would also be suitable for dry biodegradable materials, and could be used in compost bins.
