The idea is to create smart sunglasses that can detect and automatically darken bright spots and glares. The lenses will be LCD screens with a light detecting sensor at the nose which will be able to work with a microprocessor to identify the glare. The pixels could be switched on and off to black out certain areas of the lenses and could identify the movements of the user's head and respond to the new areas of glare. The glasses could have applications for people with light...

A new plastic able to 'bleed' and heal like human skin will self-repair while also sending a signal of its damage. The plastic will be incorporated with molecular bridges which will cross the polymer chains making up the plastic. When a bridge is broken due to damage to the plastic, they will change color to red. Exposure to light will allow the connections to repair themselves, and the red color will fade as the damage 'heals'.

A new polymer that kills bacteria and germs when exposed to sunlight could open the door to a wide range of self-cleaning furniture and gadgets. The titanium dioxide-doped polymer coating works through an electrochemical reaction. UV light from the sun causes the titanium dioxide to produce free radicals, which degrade cell walls and cell DNA, thus destroying bacteria and fungi. Smudges and fingerprints also disappear from the material after an hour of exposure to sunlight.

The new cycling system will let you use both your legs and your arms while riding. The bicycle will feature a separate drive train that will be powered by the arms and will work with the pedal system. This will allow the rider to also use their arm, shoulder, and chest muscles to create forward momentum and encourages a better, full body workout. The adjustable system can be set for different arm lengths and the tilting action of the hand crank steers the front wheel.

A new plant-based extract used as a clothing dye for over 3500 years could also provide a green alternative to the metal ores used to make lithium-ion batteries. The extract, called purpurin, comes from the root of the madder plant. Purpurin, along with other biologically-based color molecules, contain carbonyl and hydroxyl groups able to pass electrons back and forth in the same way as traditional electrodes. Purpurin can be made and stored at room temperature, with a color change...

Why not develop a way to harvest the energy generated during photosynthesis to create a greener form of energy and a new generation of solar panels? During photosynthesis, light is turned into chemical energy by the splitting of water atoms into hydrogen and oxygen. The electrons are then used to create sugars to feed the plant. The idea is to find a way to collect those electrons before they are turned to sugars. The technique will involve interrupting the paths along which...

The multi-modal vehicle concept drone can fly, swim and hop through various terrains by shedding and transforming parts of itself as needed. The transforming drone will travel by land, sea and air either under the control of a remote operator or semi-autonomously. As it adjusts itself to the conditions, the wings will become fins for underwater travel, for example, and then swapped for wheels for on-land travel. Currently, carrying out a drone mission on such different...

Designed with freelance and other independent workers in mind, the desktop assistant will help the user develop more efficient work habits. Featuring an inviting squishy top and a small LCD screen, the device concept will use gamification to help individuals manage their time. By accessing the user's online organization systems, such as apps and calendars, the device will create a to do list based on the user's own input. Throughout the day, it will display messages on its screen:...

By sending pressure waves along suspect pipes, it is possible to develop a way to quickly and more accurately locate leaks, particularly in plastic piping. The system can be attached to a standard water hydrant and will feature a valve that can be rapidly opened and closed to create a pressure wave that will travel down the pipe. When the wave encounters any unexpected defects in the pipe, such as a crack, it will bounce back a reflection that can be used to determine the location...
